Environmental Responsibility
Environmental responsibility is embedded in the Shipyard’s operational and governance framework. Our practices focus on protecting natural resources, meeting regulatory obligations, and driving continuous environmental improvement, supporting our long‑term sustainability objectives.
Water Stewardship & Marine Protection:
- Wash water from dry docks, floating docks, and washing bays is treated through the Shipyard’s Contaminated Water Treatment Plant (CWTP).
- Treated water is independently tested to ensure compliance with discharge limits under the Consent to Operate (CTO) License.
- Cooling water and marine water sampling are conducted monthly to safeguard the surrounding marine environment.
Waste Management & Circular Economy
- Spent blasting grit is recycled and reused where feasible, supporting material efficiency and waste minimization. Grit that cannot be recycled is transferred to licensed local entities for sustainable management through reuse, recycling, or recovery.
- Scrap metal and batteries are recovered through controlled tender processes and sold to authorized recycling and manufacturing companies.
- Waste is segregated at source using color‑coded systems and processed through approved onsite and external waste‑management facilities.
- Domestic waste and wood waste is managed via the Ras Laffan Industrial City Waste Management Facility.
Energy & Resource Efficiency
- The Shipyard has upgraded welding operations by replacing 416 legacy machines with 220 energy‑efficient units, reducing electricity consumption while maintaining operational performance.
- LED lighting has replaced metal halide fixtures across operational areas, improving energy efficiency and lowering consumption.
- Power quality is monitored across all substations through regular power factor checks, ensuring compliance with Kahramaa requirements and maintaining levels above 0.9.
Environmental Monitoring & Compliance
To ensure transparency and regulatory compliance, the Shipyard conducts:
- Monthly cooling water testing
- Monthly marine water sampling
- Monthly ambient air quality monitoring
- Annual shipyard boundary noise monitoring
Monitoring results are submitted quarterly to RLIC and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) in accordance with permit requirements.
Environmental Governance & Performance Oversight:
- Monthly environmental awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and workforce engagement activities
- Regular internal environmental audits and annual shipyard‑wide inspections
- Annual environmental evaluations of contractors and vendors
These measures strengthen environmental governance, promote accountability, and support continual improvement aligned with ESG best practices.
